Chapter 11

Elizabeth slipped out of the room first, had Naya wanting to jump on her and interrogate her to no end. The questions turned blank when three more figures stepped out, the middle man unconscious and dragged off. Fear spiked, had her moving before she could think.

The hand on her arm squeezed in tight, a painful warning—pain that shouldn’t have existed until she remembered Jane, the housekeeper, was the one beside her.

“Jane—”

“I suggest keeping that argument sealed tight and never mentioning this again.”

“Are they going to kill him?”

“He hasn’t finished his servitude yet, so no—Naya!”

The housekeeper gasped when she twisted out of the grasp and raced towards the female vampire, blocking the way before the woman could turn a corner.

“I want to watch.”

The announcement stopped Elizabeth in her tracks, upset expression turning contemplative as she studied Naya.

“You want to watch your Fae companion get his punishment?”

“To make sure he stays alive,” she clarified. Surprise flickered on the woman’s face. “He hasn’t finished his servitude yet. Killing him won’t benefit you. He’s full Fae and of much more value for whatever questions you still haven’t asked. He didn’t kill anyone.”

“He played a prank and lost me some deals. Putting poison in our guests’ food—minus the vampires—was distasteful and won’t be excused…and by the look on your face, I assumed you didn’t know.”

Oh, Angelo. It became all too clear why he had shown up and what she had to do.

“There’s no excuse,” she agreed, surprising the woman once more. “Are you going to kill him?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“You already listed down the reasons.”

The way her heart jumped made her dizzy. So did the relief. She quickly hid both and leveled the vampire with a look. “Then I want to watch.”

“You know I could interpret that as your distrust for our word,” Elizabeth murmured, gaze narrowing. The long pause had nerves creeping up Naya until she was fighting off shudders. “But I’m not going to. Consider this gratitude for your help earlier.”

Elizabeth ushered her to the side, then was walking again. Naya promptly followed as she was led away from Jane, who kept watch before stepping back and shaking her head. Alone with the vampire, the silence was excruciating as they left the mansion and crossed to the building, where they knocked on Reggie’s office. Reggie took one look at her and sighed.

“Whatever argument you’re about to present to me—”

“She just wants to watch the punishment as it takes place. Meanwhile, I have to get back to the party. We can’t have all the guests wondering why we disappeared. Reggie, keep an eye on her. I still have her for the rest of the week.”

Reggie looked highly annoyed but managed a cheerful nod. When Elizabeth glided off, the annoyed look was shot at Naya.

“Come.” Miffed, the half-vampire lifted his chin. “Your insistence has disrupted my time off, by the way. So has Armand’s antics.”

Damage control, she deduced and wondered what he had been up to in his office. The questions were held down as he led her underground, to a series of halls, and down a plush room with seats elevated like a theater.
